Long Livery the King: The Toyota GT86 Goes Retro
The Toyota GT86, more commonly known to us American folk as the Scion FR-S, has been leading the way of Toyota’s new regime. In true homage to the royalty that have come before the GT86, during the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, Toyota will be debuting a special court of six that have been inspired by of some of the greatest Toyota performance cars from the past 50 years. From the resized liveries by Motor Mode to the various performance and wheel modifications, the classics have been revived in the bodies of these modern day sports cars. So in case you can’t fancy your way across the pond to check them out at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, then just scroll down to find out more details about these amazing GT86s!
Yatabe Speed Trial Toyota 2000GT
It started in Japan with inspiration from the yellow/green 2000GT that Toyota entered at the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix. This livery is a remembrance of how the 2000GT averaged a pace of 128.76mph, smashed three world records and set 13 international speed and endurance records at the Yatabe High Speed Testing Course.
Shelby Toyota 2000GT
Coming to America, Toyota handed over a trio of 2000GTs to the legendary Carroll Shelby to design a high-performance vehicle worthy to compete in SCCA. This classic livery represents the 1968 championship when 2000GT drivers Scooter Patrick and Dave Jordan finished 2nd and 3rd overall.
Ove Andersson’s Toyota Celica 1600GT
Red rover, red rover, Toyota calls Ove over! Toyota backed Swedish rally driver Ove Andersson with a first-generation Celica to compete in the 1972 Daily Mirror RAC Rally. This partnership would eventually lead to the formation of Toyota Team Europe, which is today known as Toyota Motorports GmbH. Andersson’s rally Celicas were the only non-white based liveries in Toyota’s rally history.
IMSA GTU Toyota Celica
An 80’s throwback. As TRD USA was getting its footing in North America, a couple third-generation Celicas were prepared by TRD Japan, modified by TRD USA to GTU regulations and given this retro livery in order to compete in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GT Championship. The real question is – "Who wore it better; this GT86 or the Speedhunters’ Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S?"
Castrol Toyota Celica GT-Four
I feel like I’m playing Gran Turismo 2 on my PlayStation again. These third-generation Celitca GT-Fours saw a lot of success in the World Rally Championships with seven podium finishes, 13 fastest stages times and an overall win in 1995. While the ST205 Castrol Celica GT-Four campaign was short lived, the red-white-and-green livery is arguably one of the most memorable in Toyota’s rally history.
Esso Ultra Tiger Toyota Supra
It's GR-R-REAT! When Esso pounced onto the team, they went with one of the most distinctive and predatory race liveries in the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC) history. The team won four titles with the Toyota Supra running the courses from 1995 all the way to 2006. I guess the cat's out of the bag on how dominant of a car the Supra is.
