Some wait for this moment all year, the opening of Hammertown and the kick-off of a week-long series of Ultra4 racing events culminating with the 2015 Nitto King of The Hammers this coming Friday, February 6th. An event which is nearly indescribable to those who've never attended, it is widely considered to be America's toughest one-day off-road racing event - and with approximately only one-third of competitors finishing the unlimited 4400 class race each year, it lives up to it's reputation.
The route, steadily lengthening each of the past nine years, traverses around Johnson Valley, California in a grouping of trails dubbed "The Hammers." This year's route, released just a couple days ago, is the longest yet - clocking in at 215.2 miles of desert and rock-crawling terrain. Some teams arrived last week to begin pre-running and fine tuning their vehicles, others are just getting set up. You never know quite what to expect out on the lakebed - rain came down in the past couple days, creating muddy conditions on the lakebed, but it looks to be drying up quite well with a nice forecast for the week ahead.
