When it comes to automotive television, no name is more internationally known than Jeremy Clarkson. Most recognized for his former role as one of three talking heads from BBC’s motoring show Top Gear, Clarkson’s brash humor and unique insight into the automobile has propelled him higher than any other automotive journalist of record. On our recent trip to the Rubicon Trail to cover the 63rd annual Jeepers Jamboree, we learned that Clarkson had covered the event some 22 years prior.
At that time, the Jeep Wrangler YJ was getting ready to launch in Europe in a right-hand-drive configuration. To get a preview of the rugged platform, Clarkson, along with a team of videographers, decided to make the trek to the High Sierra Mountains to see just how capable the square-eyed Wrangler was. Obviously, a normal test drive wouldn’t have sufficed. So, they opted to take the leaf-sprung Jeep over the famed Rubicon Trail during the annual Jeepers Jamboree. The resulting 1993 video of the journey is a bit dated, in more ways than one, but it does remain an entertaining piece of television history.
Now that Clarkson, along with his most famous co-host James May and Richard Hammond, are all embarking on a new automotive show through Amazon Prime, maybe we will see them revisit the famous off-road adventure. After all, these guys are known for some of the most over-the-top off-pavement shenanigans as they are anything. Until then, check out the classic clip below.
