Gallery - Concept Cars at 2013 New York Auto Show
Concept cars provide a canvas for car manufacturers to dream big about design – which is why we love them so much. If accountants, advisors, engineers and machinists didn’t have a say in the matter, these are what our production cars could look like. The 2013 New York International Auto Show has a number of newly unveiled concept cars including: Subaru WRX, Acura NSX, Lincoln MKC, Honda Urban SUV, Toyota Corolla Furia, Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis, and BMW Active Tourer. While these designs will never grace our streets, elements from them will play a heavy influence on the production versions. The Subaru WRX Concept gave fans their first peak during its world reveal at the New York Auto Show. With a focus on sharp handling, AWD grip and turbocharged power, enthusiasts are excited about a more aggressive and stylish WRX. Earning awards at the North America Auto Show, the Hyundai HCD-14 Concept takes steps towards a more luxurious Genesis coupe. Slated for production in 2014, it should only be a matter of time before we see a reveal of the production version. BMW will be expanding their line-up of ultra-efficient alternative powertrains as the Active Tourer Concept shows. Slated to be a plug-in hybrid, the Active Tourer is said to use both a three-cylinder engine and an electric motor powering the rear wheels for an estimated 190hp. Acura’s new NSX supercar was revealed at the North American Auto show and further evolves the previous concept revealed last year. With an emphasis on “the synergy between man and machine” the low stance and edgy lines both in and outside of the NSX Concept speak to tech-driven luxury. Also revealed at the North American Auto Show, the Honda Urban SUV Concept continues Honda’s emphasis on compact SUVs. Intended to be both fun and fuel-efficient, its dynamic character lines give it a sleek and modern presence. Lincoln moved towards a more compact version of luxury with its MKC Concept SUV. With elegant and sculpted lines on the exterior, the interior continues those cues adding openness with a fixed panoramic roof. Surprisingly, the new Furia Concept points towards an edgier future for the 45th production year of the Corolla. Bolder and more expressive styling ushers this staple compact into its next generation. These designs all speak to an exciting future as automotive design, technology, and driving innovation all progress. If you get a chance, stop by and see these for yourself - the New York Auto Show is going through April 7th at Jacob Javits Center in NYC. -Kristin Cline
