Formula Drift fans got dirty in the Dirty South after some of the wildest battles at Road Atlanta since the inaugural event back in 2004. The 2.54-mile, 12-turn track only hoped to contain the battles between the top 32 qualifying competitors all hunting for the podium finish. In the end it was the unknown hero, Nitto Tire Driver Odi Bakchis winning his first ever career event win!
Here is a Fast Five Recap on Formula Drift Atlanta:
5. Bye-Bye-Bye
FD fans must have been disappointed when the opening tandem battle gave Justin Pawlak the easy bye run. Good thing it was followed up with an amazing battle between Tyler McQuarrie and Pat Goodin, which resulted in the first "One More Time" (OMT) of the round. In total there were 3 bye runs, all in the Top 32, and 5 OMTs at this Road Atlanta.
4. The Comeback Halted
Sorry Tanner Foust fans, but just when we all though he was about to take the VW Passat to the "Top Gear" he got stonewalled by Geoff Stoneback in their battle during the Top 32. Tanner will be shutting it down for the rest of the Formula Drift season until the last event at Irwindale Speedway.
3. The Comeback Begins
Mad Mike left as a fan favorite and he's back as a fan favorite. Charging out of the gates in clouds of smoke so thick the weatherman had to change the forecast, Mad Mike whipped RadBul around Road Atlanta making the fans cheer like mad! Forrest Wang might have gotten the victory after a breathtaking OMT battle in the Top 16, but Mad Mike proved to be a serious competitor for the rest of this season.
2. Ken He Do It?
The Gush has been a name all over Formula Drift for years and years, but he's taken a six-year hiatus from the podium. That all changed this year, in this round after his completely focused runs earning him 2nd Place at Road Atlanta. Ken Gushi is determined this year to be back amongst the winners.
1. When Your Bakchis Against the Wall
What do you do when you're not one of the most talked about drivers in the Formula Drift series? How about back-to-back podium wins and your first career event win!? That's what Odi Bakchis did. You may not have heard his name before, but you'll be hearing it a lot more as the current championship points leader continues his winning ways this season.
