Automotive enthusiasts often times stereotype one another: "Honda ricer" or "They're into domestics/muscle cars", and what makes stereotyping so easy all boils down to the type of car you drive. Safe to say, Porsche heads ran strong at Rennsport Reunion V.
Despite being Porsche-specific, Rennsport Reunion brings together all sorts of people to this quadrennial (similar to the Olympics) party. From brand fan boys, owners, even celebrities – everyone wants to be a part of it, including yours truly; here's a breakdown of the types of attendees you're likely to find at Rennsport Reunion V.
Grassroots Types
These are the ones who traveled in their Porsche from all across the country. Caravans to Rennsport Reunion V were planned immediately after the dates were locked in and confirmed. I spoke with one gentleman who drove all the way with his best friend from Minnesota in his '99 911 C2, driving some of the best roads the US has to offer along the way. They talked about the drive as if it was a bucket list item, which is pretty cool if you ask me.
Historians
These people know everything about every Porsche you’re looking at. They study the brand, know the company's heritage and usually are willing to share this knowledge with others. Anytime you think you know a lot about Porsches, they'll know way more. You can't find their historical facts online, all is handed down from generation to generation. If you get the opportunity to chat them up, take advantage; this is next level car enthusiasm.
Track Drivers/Racers
Look at the venue Rennsport Reunion V is held at: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Legendary. Naturally there are Porsche owners who will personally track their cars or simply love to watch others attack the Corkscrew. There are seven racing classes with over 320 race cars, so there's no shortage of track eye-candy for the fanboys.
Concourse/Corral Afficionados
These Porsche owners (and yes, you have to be an owner to join the Corral) drive in and meticulously maintain their car in the parking lot throughout the entire weekend. You'll often find them hanging out, inspecting and discussing other cars in the Corral. This is the most entertaining part because you see the most variety: from bone-stock, full OEM, period correct to wide-body, turbocharged, holy WTF-aftermarket custom-painted types. Imagine Cars & Coffee...but with all Porsches.
The Next Generation/Brand Loyalists
I believe we’re car enthusiasts first, brand enthusiasts second – but this group will carry the Porsche legacy onward. They're brand fanatics who attend to get information on their next purchase, whether new or old, are really are a huge demographic that Porsche has hit with this event. Interested in what Porsche is about? This is the event to attend.
Celebrities
Hide your girlfriend, wife or life partner; here come the celebrities at Rennsport Reunion V. Factory racecar drivers both past and present, corporate execs and stars, like Jerry Seinfield (who happens to be one of the most insane Porsche collectors around), make their presence known. Really cool to be able to rub shoulders with like-minded car nuts who just happen to be famous!
Car LOVERS
File me under this category. If you like cars in general, why wouldn’t you want to be at a Porsche event that only takes place every four years? The opportunity to see racecars from decades past, running on the track, as well as modern offerings is too much to pass up for any gearhead. Rennsport Reunion V is truly Porsche heaven on earth!
